The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has designated all custodial facilities across the country as red zones in anticipation of the planned ‘free Nnamdi Kanu’ protest.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.

Activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, had earlier announced that a protest march to the presidential villa over Kanu’s continued detention will take place on October 20. The demonstration is expected to be staged around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has also urged those planning to participate in the protest to comply with a court order restricting gatherings near key government infrastructures. The force further cautioned that anyone who attempts to use the protest to instigate violence, damage property, or incite unrest either physically or through online platforms would be “dealt with decisively”.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, service spokesperson Abubakar Umar said the directive is aimed at preventing unauthorized entry into custodial facilities during the protest. He emphasized that the centres remain restricted zones and advised the public to stay away.

“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as red zones,” Umar said.

“The NCoS reiterates that correctional centres are restricted areas. Anyone who has no official business therein should stay off to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches.”

He called on citizens to cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace and order throughout the protest period.
