The Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has expressed his deepest condolences to the people of Essa in Katcha Local Government Area following the tanker explosion that claimed several lives and left many others injured.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the tragedy as worrisome, unfortunate, and deeply saddening.

“This is yet another painful, difficult, and tragic incident for the people and the state government,” Bago said.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the explosion and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The governor lamented that, despite repeated public awareness campaigns on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, people continue to engage in such risky behaviour.

“It is disheartening that people still rush to collect fuel from crashed tankers despite several sensitisation efforts. Life should be valued, no matter the hardship,” he stated.

Bago commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) for its swift response and assured residents that the state government, through relevant ministries and agencies, would provide the necessary support to the victims and their families.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a tanker exploded in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area, killing many and injuring several others who were scooping its contents. The injured victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for treatment.
