The National Governors Forum (NGF) has expressed full support for the proposed bill seeking to establish reserved seats for women in Nigeria’s legislative bodies.
In a statement released after their meeting in the early hours of Friday, the governors called on their members to intensify lobbying efforts among federal and state lawmakers to ensure the bill’s passage, noting that it would significantly enhance women’s political representation.
The bill, which is due for consideration at the National Assembly, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution by creating special constituencies to be exclusively contested by women in both the National and State Assemblies—a move designed to temporarily increase women’s participation in governance.
The forum also commended the Federal Government’s fiscal policies, especially those implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), describing them as vital steps toward stabilizing the nation’s economy.
Additionally, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to tackling the country’s rising security challenges, pledging closer collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) to address emerging threats and strengthen national security.
