The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their qualification campaign for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a strong note, claiming a convincing 2–0 win over the Benin Republic in Friday’s first-leg clash held in Lomé, Togo.

First-half goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo ensured a comfortable victory for the nine-time African champions, who dominated proceedings from start to finish.

Nigeria signaled their attacking intent early when Rasheedat Ajibade’s clever lob in the sixth minute beat goalkeeper Ogoun but bounced off the crossbar. Moments later, Folashade Ijamilusi forced another fine save as the Falcons kept the pressure high.

Their persistence paid off in the 23rd minute when Deborah Abiodun sliced open the Beninese defense with a precise through ball to Ihezuo, who slotted home from close range to put Nigeria ahead.

Benin almost found an equalizer in the 36th minute, but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie pulled off a brilliant save to deny Moumouni.

Shortly before halftime, Abiodun once again provided the assist, setting up Okoronkwo for a composed finish that doubled Nigeria’s lead.

Benin came close to reducing the deficit before the break when Moumouni’s shot rattled the post.

The second half saw a more controlled performance from the Super Falcons, who managed the game efficiently while keeping their defense solid. The duo of Osinachi Ohale and Tosin Demehin remained resolute at the back, and Nnadozie capped her fine outing with a late reflex save to deny Sadikou’s header.

With the result, the Super Falcons take a commanding advantage into Tuesday’s return leg in Abeokuta at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, where they will look to finish the job and seal their qualification for WAFCON 2026.
