The Rivers State Government has announced its readiness to host the Nigeria Women’s Premier League (NWFL) Super 6 for the 2025/2026 season.

The decision marks another bold step in the state’s commitment to advancing women’s football development both locally and nationally.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NWFL held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Chris Green, who represented Governor Siminalayi Fubara, commended the league’s management for bringing the event to Rivers State for the first time.

Green reaffirmed the state’s dedication to supporting initiatives that promote women’s football, promising that Rivers State would not only host but also deliver a world-class Super 6 championship at the end of the season.

He described women’s football as an integral part of Nigeria’s sporting culture and emphasised the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the sustained growth of the women’s game.

Representing the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, the Head of Women’s Football at the Federation, Aisha Falode, applauded the NWFL board for its resilience in managing the league. She pledged the NFF’s continued support, particularly in addressing the long-standing calendar inconsistencies that have disrupted the competition.

Falode, speaking on behalf of the NFF president, also urged the NWFL to strengthen unity within its ranks and build a brand capable of attracting more corporate sponsorship and investment into women’s football.

The AGM gathered football administrators, club owners, players’ representatives, and other key stakeholders, all of whom reiterated their commitment to advancing women’s football across Nigeria.
