The son of Mudashiru Obasa, speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has been confirmed as the substantive chairman of Agege Local Government.

His confirmation came after the resignation of Tunde Azeez, the former chairman, who had been on medical leave since shortly after his inauguration on July 27, 2025.

Azeez officially resigned on Wednesday due to ongoing health challenges.

His resignation letter was read by Adeshina Haruna, leader of the house, during plenary at the Agege council chamber.

Following the announcement, lawmakers unanimously voted to confirm Obasa, who had been serving in an acting capacity, as the substantive chairman.

Before now, Obasa had expressed interest in contesting for the council chairmanship in the 2025 local government elections but was dropped amid opposition to his candidacy.

Council members noted that since Azeez went on medical leave, Obasa had effectively managed mobilisation and grassroots engagement within the local government.

They explained that confirming him as chairman was necessary to avoid a leadership vacuum and maintain administrative continuity in Agege.

The legislators praised Azeez for his contributions while in office and wished him a full recovery.

In his acceptance speech, Obasa pledged to strengthen ongoing initiatives and deepen collaboration with community stakeholders to enhance service delivery in the council.

During the plenary, lawmakers also reviewed committee structures and oversight functions, emphasising the importance of transparency and accountability in the execution of local government projects.
