One person has been taken into custody in connection with a loud explosion that caused panic in the Owo area of Ondo State.

Residents and passersby were alarmed on Saturday when a sudden explosion occurred near a commercial bank in Owo Local Government Area, prompting people to run for safety. Thick smoke briefly rose from the scene, causing traders to abandon their stalls and nearby shop owners to quickly lock up.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway. According to the Command’s spokesperson, Olusola Ayanlade, the blast was caused by a banger, and the arrested suspect has been identified as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu from Owo.

“One Ayoola Daniel Ojumu of Owo has been arrested in connection with the incident and has confessed to his role. His accomplice, who reportedly set off the banger, remains at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them,” he said.

Ayanlade stressed that the Command will not tolerate any security breaches, especially as the festive season approaches. He urged parents and guardians to caution their children during the celebrations and warned that authorities would act decisively against anyone attempting to disturb public peace.

He also appealed to residents to remain calm, stay alert, and promptly report suspicious activities to the police. The suspect in custody, he added, will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
