Abdurrahman Kandarawa, who represents Bakori constituency in the Katsina state house of assembly, has urged the federal government to stop arresting “peaceful bandits”.
A circulating video captured Kandarawa making the statement while seated beside Isiya Kwashen Garwa — a feared bandit figure reportedly listed as wanted by defence authorities — and Abubakar Barde, chairman of Bakori LGA.
During the address, Kandarawa acknowledged Barde and praised Garwa as the “commander of peace”. His comments followed the release of 37 abducted victims, which he attributed to a successful “peace deal” with the bandits.
In his remarks delivered in Hausa, the lawmaker thanked all parties involved in the negotiation and announced that 17 women, 2 children, and 18 men had regained their freedom — totaling 37 residents. He added that no one from Bakori remained in captivity after the handover.
He called on citizens and authorities to work collectively towards sustained peace, maintaining that community members also have roles to play beyond government interventions.
Kandarawa further stated that while offenders among the Fulani could be punished when necessary, authorities should refrain from indiscriminately arresting them in markets or public places. He emphasised their need for basic infrastructure including healthcare and water, urging the government to address those needs.
