The governor of Abia state, Alex Otti, paid a visit on Sunday to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto correctional centre.

Kanu was convicted of terrorism last month and sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the federal high court in Abuja.

A video shared online captured the moment “Alex Otti visits Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto prison.”

Following Kanu’s conviction, Otti had earlier announced that he was working on a strategy to help secure Kanu’s release.

In a Facebook post, Aloy Ejimakor praised the governor, calling him “a man of his words” and expressing gratitude for keeping his promise to visit Kanu.

He wrote: “Thank you, Your Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, for fulfilling the promise you made to me to visit your brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. May God bless you. And may your august visit to Sokoto today be the first step to ending this undeserved ordeal, sooner than later.”

Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s brother, also reacted, describing the visit as a shared expression of support.

He said: “Governor Alex Otti and the people of Sokoto have made a unified statement by visiting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

As of the time of filing this report, neither Otti nor the Sokoto correctional centre has released an official statement regarding the visit.
