Florian Wirtz netted his first Premier League goal as Liverpool edged past Wolves 2-1 in a tense encounter at Anfield.
Soon after Ryan Gravenberch broke the deadlock late in the first half, Wirtz burst through on goal after a pass from Hugo Ekitike and slipped the ball past Jose Sa to put Liverpool two goals clear, seemingly putting the game beyond Wolves.
However, the visitors responded early after the restart when Santi Bueno bundled the ball in following a save from Alisson Becker to deny Tolu Arokodare. That goal sparked nerves inside Anfield as Wolves pressed for a surprise equaliser, with Arokodare later going close on two more occasions.
Arne Slot’s side were far from convincing against the league’s bottom team, even though Ekitike and Alexis Mac Allister both hit the woodwork before half-time. Liverpool failed to maintain their rhythm in the second half and ended the match under sustained pressure.
Despite their determined display, Wolves remain without a win after 18 Premier League matches and have yet to earn a point in seven games under Edwards. Liverpool, by contrast, extended their unbeaten run to six and moved into the top four by full-time.
