Nkunku brace powers AC Milan past Verona to extend Serie A lead

Christopher Nkunku struck twice after the break as AC Milan cruised to a 3-0 victory over Verona, moving Massimiliano Allegri’s men two points clear at the top of Serie A.

Christian Pulisic had given the hosts the lead in the first half, and a commanding second-half display saw Milan jump above rivals Inter ahead of their game later on Sunday.

The opening stages offered few clear chances, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s powerful effort from the edge of the area drifting narrowly wide as the best opportunity.

Milan eventually broke through just before half-time when Pulisic ghosted in at the far post from a right-wing corner and steered Adrien Rabiot’s flick into the roof of the net from close range.

The Rossoneri carried that momentum into the second half. Just 51 seconds after the restart, Nkunku earned a penalty after being brought down by Victor Nelsson, and he calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom-left corner.

Nkunku doubled his tally in the 53rd minute, reacting quickest to a rebound after Lorenzo Montipo pushed Luka Modric’s shot onto the post, finishing from close range.

Verona believed they had pulled one back late on through Gift Orban, but the effort was ruled out after he was adjudged to have fouled Mike Maignan in the build-up.

Data Debrief: Nkunku ends Serie A drought

Nkunku had failed to score in his previous 11 Serie A appearances for Milan, but he ended that run emphatically with two goals at San Siro.

He took only two shots in the match, both considered big chances, and converted them both. He also completed all six of his passes in the final third, with only Rabiot attempting more shots overall.

Pulisic was again influential. Since making his Serie A debut in 2023-24, he is one of just two players to be directly involved in 50 or more top-flight goals (31 goals, 19 assists), alongside Lautaro Martinez, who has 53.

Milan have now beaten Verona in their last 10 league meetings and have secured five straight home wins against them in Serie A for the first time.
