Manchester United held as Wolves fight back for point

Wolverhampton Wanderers fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, picking up only their third Premier League point of the season and ending a long run of defeats in the process.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim returned to his preferred tactical setup after the win over Newcastle, and his team showed early promise without fully asserting control. Wolves goalkeeper José Sá was alert to push away Luke Shaw’s corner, while Benjamin Šeško went close after shaking off Matt Doherty, narrowly missing the bottom corner. Wolves were encouraged by their start, although Hwang Hee-chan failed to convert his chances.

United took the lead just before the half-hour mark with a fortunate goal. Joshua Zirkzee’s flick rebounded off Ladislav Krejčí and fell back to him, and his subsequent effort took a deflection on its way past Sá. The hosts looked capable of extending their lead, with Patrick Dorgu seeing a deflected effort go narrowly wide and Šeško striking the post with a header. Despite this, Wolves continued to threaten, as Tolu Arokodare headed over and Senne Lammens denied Hugo Bueno. Their persistence paid off just before half-time, when Krejčí made amends by heading past Lammens after capitalising on a poor clearance attempt by Zirkzee.

After the break, both sides created chances. Matheus Cunha fired over for United, while Ayden Heaven saw his shot blocked. Šeško headed straight at Sá, and Diogo Dalot’s effort missed the target. Goalkeepers at both ends were busy, with Sá producing an excellent save to deny Yerson Mosquera, while Lammens responded with a fine stop to prevent Krejčí from scoring again.

United pushed for a late winner, forcing further saves from Sá and deflections that denied them clear openings. Wolves, however, nearly snatched it themselves, only for Dalot to intervene at the last moment to stop Jhon Arias.

The hosts briefly thought they had won the match when Dorgu finished after an initial save from Šeško’s effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Wolves held on for a valuable point, ending a 12-match losing run across all competitions, while Manchester United were left frustrated after missing another chance to climb the Premier League table.
