A member of the US House of Representatives, Riley Moore, says the creation of the US-Nigeria working group is an important move toward addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Moore spoke after the conclusion of a two-day high-level engagement between officials from both countries.

The working group was set up following President Donald Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’ (CPC).

Trump’s action was based on allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria, claims the federal government has consistently denied.

Members of the working group held their inaugural meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA), led the Nigerian delegation, while Allison Hooker, the US under-secretary of state, headed the American team.

In a post on X on Saturday, Moore said the partnership would strengthen coordination and cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, while advancing shared commitments to religious freedom.

He described the collaboration as a unique opportunity to deepen bilateral relations.

“Nigeria has a once in a lifetime chance to strengthen its relationship with the US as we work cooperatively to counter violent terrorism throughout the northern states and middle belt, end the persecution of Christians, and address the broader economic and security challenges the nation faces,” he said.

“Nigeria now also has a real opportunity to increase its capacity to be a stabilizing force in the region. This agreement shows the Nigerians are continuing to take the situation seriously and are working to address the security conditions in good faith.”

Moore also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government for its willingness to partner with the United States in confronting the challenges.
