The Oyo State Government has shut down Ar-Rahmon Khabul Herbal Nigeria Limited, located at 20 Cele, Off Tioya Oritamerin Road in Ibadan, following confirmed environmental breaches and threats to public health.

Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd), disclosed on Friday that the enforcement exercise was carried out by OYRLEA officials in collaboration with the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The development was conveyed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

She explained that the action followed repeated petitions from residents who complained of persistent offensive odours and health problems allegedly linked to the company’s activities.

She said: “The action is necessary to protect public health, preserve environmental standards, and enforce regulatory compliance across the state.”

She added, “Joint inspections by officials revealed that the company operates a herbal production facility within a densely populated residential area, in clear violation of environmental and public health standards.”

According to the chairperson, investigations revealed that tobacco leaf is a key ingredient in the production process, producing a strong putrid smell considered hazardous and capable of posing serious health risks to nearby residents.

Inspection findings also showed the release of harmful toxic gases into the atmosphere, the discharge of wastewater into a nearby community water source, a chimney considered too short and directly facing residential buildings, and the accumulation of solid waste within the premises despite claims that a waste contractor had been engaged.

“Prior to the enforcement action, the Authority had issued an abatement notice directing the company to cease operations and relocate within 21 days in accordance with the Oyo State Environmental, Sanitation and Waste Control Regulations,” she said.

OYRLEA and collaborating agencies stressed that air pollution, hazardous waste discharge, and improper waste management violate environmental laws. Justice Aderemi reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ongoing monitoring and enforcement to ensure residents live in a safe and healthy environment.
