Mariano Troilo struck late to hand Parma Calcio 1913 a 1-0 victory over AC Milan at San Siro, dealing another major setback to the hosts’ Serie A title ambitions.
Milan entered Sunday’s encounter unbeaten in 24 league matches, but the defeat their first since the opening weekend leaves them 10 points adrift of the leaders.
Mateo Pellegrino threatened early, volleying just wide inside two minutes. After that, Milan controlled much of the play but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
Christian Pulisic tested Edoardo Corvi with a fierce effort from a tight angle and later fired just over the bar before halftime. Shortly after the restart, Pulisic also had a low strike cleared off the line by Troilo.
Rafael Leao came close when he met Adrien Rabiot’s cross with a crisp volley that struck the woodwork, yet Parma’s defence remained resolute.
Their resilience paid off in the 80th minute when Troilo rose highest to head Emanuele Valeri’s corner toward the far post. The goal was initially ruled out for a foul on Mike Maignan but was awarded after a VAR review determined that Lautaro Valenti had not obstructed the goalkeeper.
Data Debrief: Milan’s hopes fading away
Massimiliano Allegri had warned before kickoff that Milan could not afford mistakes in the Scudetto race, but they slipped up nonetheless.
The loss marks only their second league defeat of the campaign and ends what had been their second-longest unbeaten run in a single Serie A season.
Despite dominating with 25 shots worth a combined 1.33 expected goals (xG), Milan could not find the net. Pulisic, Leao, Rabiot and Ardon Jashari each registered four attempts but failed to convert.
Parma, by contrast, managed nine shots totaling 0.46 xG, with Troilo scoring from their final attempt of the match — a result that strengthens the belief that it is now Inter’s title to lose.
