Benfica will be unable to field Gianluca Prestianni in their Champions League play-off second-leg tie against Real Madrid following UEFA’s provisional suspension.
Prestianni traveled with Benfica for Wednesday’s clash despite the ban, stemming from allegations that he racially abused Real star Vinicius Junior during the first leg of their knockout tie last week. If found guilty, he could face a 10-match ban, though Benfica insist he has done nothing wrong.
Benfica president Rui Costa affirmed the club’s support, stating Prestianni is not racist and criticizing UEFA’s provisional decision. “We understand that nothing has been proven and the player’s absence from this game is not justified,” Costa said.
UEFA confirmed the provisional suspension on Monday after an investigation into alleged discriminatory behavior, noting it applies to the next match Prestianni would otherwise be eligible for. The decision does not preclude further rulings following the ongoing investigation.
Benfica said they will appeal the UEFA decision while reaffirming their commitment to combating racism and discrimination, citing the club’s historical values and work through the Benfica Foundation.
Vini addressed the incident on social media, condemning racism and expressing frustration over procedural issues during the first leg. Prestianni has denied all allegations, insisting he did not racially abuse Vinicius and regrets the threats he received from Real Madrid players.
Real Madrid won the first leg 1-0 in Portugal and head into Wednesday’s second leg needing only a draw to advance to the Champions League knockout rounds.
