A Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Thursday granted ₦1 million bail to businesswoman Tracy Nither Nicolas Ohiri in an alleged defamation and cyberbullying case linked to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Ohiri was arraigned before the court following her arrest over social media posts reportedly connected to the minister. After hearing arguments from counsel, the presiding magistrate granted her bail in the sum of ₦1 million with two sureties in like sum.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, stood as one of her sureties in court.
During proceedings, the court was said to have cautioned against abuse of power, stressing that no individual has the right to oppress another, a remark that drew reactions from observers present in the courtroom.
However, moments after the bail was granted, tension flared outside the court premises as armed police officers reportedly attempted to rearrest Ohiri. The development led to a brief standoff between activists and security operatives, with Sowore and supporters insisting that any move to detain her again would amount to a violation of the court’s order.
The situation created a charged atmosphere around the courthouse, drawing attention from passersby and legal observers.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether the police would proceed with the attempted rearrest or comply fully with the court’s directive.
