262

Kunu Gyada (also called groundnut kunu) is a popular Northern Nigerian drink made from groundnuts. It’s creamy, nutritious, and good for both adults and children (if prepared hygienically).

Here’s a simple way to prepare it:

🥜 Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw groundnuts (peanuts)

  • 4–5 cups water (adjust to desired thickness)

  • 2–3 tablespoons sugar (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavor (optional)

  • A pinch of salt (optional)

  • Dates (optional, for natural sweetness)

  • Milk (optional)

👩🏽‍🍳 Method

1️⃣ Clean and Soak

  • Pick out stones and bad nuts.

  • Wash thoroughly.

  • Soak in water for 4–6 hours (or overnight).

2️⃣ Remove the Skin

  • Rub the soaked groundnuts between your hands.

  • Rinse to remove the brown skin.

  • Drain.

3️⃣ Blend

  • Add the peeled groundnuts to a blender.

  • Add dates (if using).

  • Blend with water until very smooth.

4️⃣ Sieve

  • Pour through a clean muslin cloth or fine sieve.

  • Squeeze well to extract the milk.

5️⃣ Sweeten & Flavor

  • Add sugar, salt, vanilla, or milk if desired.

  • Stir very well.

6️⃣ Chill

  • Refrigerate for 1–2 hours before serving.

  • Shake before drinking.

🍼 For Babies or Toddlers

If giving to a baby:

  • Don’t add sugar.

  • Make it lighter (more diluted).

  • Ensure the groundnuts are fresh and properly strained.

  • Introduce carefully if the baby hasn’t taken groundnuts before (to check for allergy).
