The Nigeria Police Council has confirmed Tunji Disu as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Disu was confirmed by the council on Monday during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, the country’s capital.
The meeting was attended by governors from Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Enugu, and Plateau, alongside ministers of police affairs, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and interior.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to forward Disu’s name to the senate for confirmation.
On February 24, Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The presidency had said Egbetokun cited “pressing family considerations” for his resignation.
On June 19, 2023, Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as IGP to replace Usman Baba. Egbetokun was then confirmed by the police council in October 2023.
Before his new appointment, Disu recently assumed duty as the assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) of the force criminal investigation department (FCID) annex, Alagbon, Lagos state.
Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University. He also possesses master’s degrees in public administration and criminology, and security and legal psychology.
He joined the force in 1992 and has since served in key leadership roles nationwide.
He served as commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, head of the intelligence response team, commissioner of police in Rivers state and the Federal Capital Territory, and AIG in charge of the special protection unit.
