The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed grief and condemnation over the deadly suicide bombings that struck Maiduguri on Monday, which claimed at least 23 lives and left 108 others injured.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Speaker Abbas said his heart is “heavy” upon learning of the blasts.

“I received with deep pain the tragic news of the bomb blasts in Maiduguri — a city that has already endured more than its fair share of grief.

“The loss of innocent lives and the suffering inflicted on families in this sacred month of Ramadan is both heartbreaking and unacceptable,” the Speaker wrote.

The bombings targeted crowded civilian areas, including the Monday Market, Post Office area, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), occurring around the time of iftar when Muslims break their daily fast during Ramadan.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed that 23 people died and 108 others were injured.

The attacks come amid a recent rise in violence in Borno, including an overnight assault on a military outpost, highlighting persistent security challenges despite years of military operations.

Earlier, the Nigerian Army had raised the alarm over the potential deployment of multiple suicide bombers in Maiduguri by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, urging residents to avoid crowded locations.
