The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander in Abia State, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, has confirmed a fatal road accident that led to the death of a tricycle rider and his female passenger on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the notorious “Sign Board” junction close to Ubani Market in Umuahia, the state capital.

Ezeoma described the crash as “tragic and sad,” noting that it happened just hours after another deadly accident along Opobo Road in Aba, where a motorcycle rider was hit by a tricycle and later run over by an approaching truck, whose driver fled the scene.

She also revealed that the same “Sign Board” junction recorded three similar accidents in 2025, leading to several fatalities.

She said, “I reiterated our call on motorists and all road users in the state to strictly obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

“We urged drivers, especially those of heavy-duty vehicles and tricycles, to exercise caution, avoid overspeeding, and be more careful at dangerous junctions.

“The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and deposited at a mortuary in Umuahia, while efforts are ongoing to trace the fleeing truck driver.”

An eyewitness reported that the victims died on Tuesday evening when a speeding truck collided with their tricycle along the Umuahia-Ubani-Uzuakoli Road.

The witness, identified simply as Uche, said the truck was moving at high speed when it struck the tricycle, dragging it underneath and killing both occupants instantly.

He added that the truck driver fled immediately after realising the victims had died.
