Key figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have arrived in Kano ahead of the anticipated defection of former governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The delegation, which arrived on Monday, includes ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; Dino Melaye; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
They were received at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
Kwankwaso is expected to join the ADC alongside Gwarzo, the Senator representing Kano Central, Rufa’i Hanga, and the Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, Hashim Dungurawa.
Report stated earlier that Kwankwaso announced his resignation from the NNPP on Sunday, citing the need for political realignment.
Kwankwaso, in a statement issued on Sunday, said, “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect.”
The former governor described his exit as a difficult step, noting his long-standing association with the party.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
Kwankwaso also expressed appreciation to the party leadership, including the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and other party organs for their support during his time.
He further acknowledged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and party supporters for their loyalty.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
