LASTMA probes N100,000 extortion claims by bus drivers

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has launched an investigation into claims that its officials extorted ₦100,000 from commercial bus drivers along the Coastal Road.

The allegation, which appeared in a Facebook post by Objectv Media, accused LASTMA officers of seizing buses and demanding payment before releasing them.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the agency, through its Public Affairs Director, Adebayo Taofiq, said it views the allegation with “utmost seriousness” and does not tolerate misconduct or abuse of office.

It added that a “thorough, impartial and comprehensive investigation” is already underway, assuring that any officer found guilty would face disciplinary measures.

The agency emphasized that it remains a professional and ethical institution, stating, “LASTMA remains a disciplined, professional and ethically guided government institution that does not, under any circumstances, condone misconduct, abuse of office or extortion by any of its personnel.”

As part of the probe, the individual identified as Tosin, who made the claim, has been invited to present evidence at the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi.

“The Authority hereby extends an open invitation to the individual identified as Tosin to appear at the Office of the General Manager, LASTMA Headquarters, Oshodi and present concrete and verifiable evidence to substantiate his claims,” the statement read.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, urging the public to report misconduct through appropriate channels, adding that “LASTMA remains resolute in its pursuit of a traffic management system anchored on fairness, orderliness and respect for the rights of all road users.”
