The National Youth Service Corps and the Nigeria Police Force have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to enhance the safety of corps members across the country.
According to a post on NYSC’s X handle on Tuesday, the pledge followed a courtesy visit by the NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Nafiu congratulated the police chief on his appointment and praised ongoing reforms within the force. He emphasised the need for continued cooperation to ensure the safety of corps members, particularly in orientation camps and host communities.
“The police have been instrumental to the success of NYSC activities and programmes since its inception,” Nafiu said.
He called for enhanced protection around corps members and NYSC facilities nationwide.
“We appeal for maximum security for Corps Members and NYSC officials within and outside the Orientation Camps,” he added.
Nafiu also raised concerns about security ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging proactive measures to safeguard corps members and their property.
“We equally solicit for protection of corps members and their properties, including Corps Lodges, strengtfor as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections,” he said.
He further addressed administrative issues regarding exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, noting that the NYSC Act exempts members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies from national service.
“I would like to interface with the Management of the Police Academy to enable the NYSC issue certificates of exemption to graduates of the institution as is statutory,” he said.
Responding, Disu assured the NYSC of sustained support and commitment to protecting corps members nationwide, noting that the police maintain records of corps lodges for swift response when needed.
“The police would continue to secure the scheme,” he said.
He also welcomed discussions on exemption certificates, pledging deeper collaboration between both institutions.
“The issue of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy is a welcome development,” he added.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed that the police would continue working closely with the NYSC to strengthen security throughout corps members’ service year.
