The Nigerian Army has announced a planned shooting exercise and advised residents of Abia State to remain calm.

The 14 Brigade, based in Ohafia, Abia State, informed the public—especially people in Ohafia and nearby communities—that the activity is part of events marking the 82 Division Corporals and Below Competition 2026. The exercise will include a Day and Night Shooting Competition involving different military formations.

According to a statement released by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Ohafia, the exercise is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Shooting Range in Ohafia, from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm.

He explained that the exercise is a routine training aimed at improving soldiers’ operational efficiency, marksmanship, and combat readiness.

The statement read, “Members of the public are therefore advised not to panic at the sound of gunshots during the period, as all activities will be conducted in a controlled and secure environment.

“For the safety of lives and property, the general public is strongly advised to: Stay away from the shooting range area throughout the duration of the exercise. Avoid unauthorised movement within and around the designated training zone.

“Adhere strictly to all instructions and warnings issued by military personnel and relevant authorities. The Nigerian Army assures the public of its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens and solicits the understanding and cooperation of the community. Please disseminate.”

The Army further clarified that the shooting exercise is a structured military training designed to prepare personnel for real-life combat situations involving firearms.
