Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth found the net within the first 10 minutes of the second half, while Sorloth added another in stoppage time to seal Atleti’s first league victory since March 14, bringing an end to a four-match losing streak in the Spanish top flight.
Athletic looked dangerous early, as Jan Oblak stayed sharp to stop Gorka Guruzeta, but the Atleti keeper was unable to prevent Aitor Paredes from scoring with a header off Inigo Ruíz de Galarreta’s out-swinging corner in the 23rd minute.
The home side managed only one shot in the opening half, yet they made it count immediately after the restart, with Griezmann finishing from Alex Baena’s deflected cross to level the score.
Sorloth then gave Atleti the lead in the 54th minute, combining with Baena in a give-and-go inside the penalty area before placing the ball into the bottom-right corner to complete the rapid comeback.
The Norwegian striker later secured the win in the 93rd minute on a counter-attack following a long pass from Nahuel Molina, making Guruzeta’s header in the sixth minute of stoppage time merely a consolation.
