Governor Abba Yusuf has directed an investigation into the alleged deduction of N1.5bn from the salaries of Kano workers.

Yusuf issued the directive on Friday while speaking at the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

The probe, according to the governor, centres on allegations against a former Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa.

He said, “Following the alleged deduction of N1.5 billion from the workers’ salaries by the former Head of Service, I hereby ordered an investigation into the allegation.”

The governor assured workers that anyone found guilty would face sanctions, adding that any recovered funds would be refunded to affected employees.

“This government is for you, will work for you, so what it needs from you is your support and commitment to work,” Yusuf added.

He further promised to offset outstanding gratuities and death benefits owed to retirees in the state.

Yusuf disclosed that his administration had so far paid N32bn out of the N48bn liabilities inherited from the previous government and pledged to clear the remaining N16bn before the expiration of his tenure in 2027.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Kabir Inuwa, praised the government for the regular payment of salaries and retirees’ entitlements.

He, however, appealed to the governor to address disparities in salaries between state and local government workers.

Inuwa also demanded a comprehensive probe into the alleged N1.5bn salary deductions and urged the government to recover the money if the allegations are confirmed.
