Bala Mohammed has described a free, independent and responsible media as a vital pillar of any progressive society.

The Bauchi State governor stated this in a message issued on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, to commemorate World Press Freedom Day celebrated annually on May 3.

According to the statement, Mohammed, who was described as a strong advocate of responsible journalism, praised journalists in Bauchi State and across Nigeria for their resilience, professionalism and dedication to truth, accountability and public enlightenment despite the challenges facing the profession.

“Governor Mohammed commended the resilience, courage, and professionalism of journalists who continue to uphold the principles of truth, accountability, and public enlightenment,” Gidado said.

The governor also acknowledged the role of the media in deepening democracy, promoting transparency and encouraging good governance.

“He emphasised that a free, independent, and responsible media remains the cornerstone of any progressive society,” the statement added.

Mohammed said, “As a government, we recognise and deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by journalists in ensuring that citizens are well-informed. Your commitment to truth and fairness contributes immensely to the growth and stability of our democracy.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining a media-friendly environment in Bauchi State, assuring journalists of the freedom to carry out their duties responsibly without intimidation.

The governor further urged journalists to uphold professional ethics through accurate, objective and nation-building reportage.

He also appealed to relevant stakeholders to continue defending press freedom, describing it as a fundamental human right crucial to sustainable development.

Mohammed encouraged media professionals to remain committed to their responsibilities while embracing innovation and professionalism in the changing media environment.

He also wished journalists in Bauchi State and across the country a successful World Press Freedom Day celebration.
