The governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun, has called on All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants to respect local government zoning arrangements and adopt consensus as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

Speaking on Tuesday at a strategic meeting in Abeokuta with house of representatives and house of assembly aspirants, alongside APC leaders from all 20 local government areas, the governor encouraged dialogue and compromise over divisive primary contests.

He noted that grassroots leaders are in the best position to evaluate aspirants and recommend suitable candidates.

“I am not a dictator, and I have no intention of imposing candidates,” the governor said.

Abiodun cautioned that contentious primaries often result in bitterness, financial strain, and internal divisions that could weaken the party’s chances in the general election.

He said adopting consensus would promote unity ahead of the polls, adding that aspirants who step down would be considered for compensation and future opportunities within the party.

The governor revealed that several aspirants who had previously aligned with party decisions have been rewarded with government appointments.

“I started contesting in 1993 and only became governor in 2019. If you don’t get it today, you may get it tomorrow,” he said.

He emphasised that such incentives are not meant to buy loyalty but to recognise commitment and strengthen unity within the party.

Abiodun reassured party members that candidate selection would be based on broad consultations with stakeholders at the grassroots level.
