The Enugu State Government has announced the arrest of Mrs. Ogechi John over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.

According to a statement published on Governor Peter Mbah’s WhatsApp media platform, the suspect, said to be from Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested on Monday morning by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

The child reportedly died after being beaten at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Neighbours quoted in the statement alleged that the incident happened around 3 p.m. on Sunday and claimed the child had suffered repeated maltreatment before her death.

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, said the government would ensure the suspect faces prosecution.

“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide,” she said.

Enih added that the government would closely monitor the legal process to ensure a speedy investigation and justice for the deceased child.

The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and warned that anyone involved in child abuse or violence would face legal consequences.

The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
