Teachers in Ogbomoso on Monday shut down classroom activities and staged a peaceful protest to the TESCOM office over the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State.

The protesters carried placards demanding stronger security measures around schools and urging authorities to intensify efforts to rescue those still in captivity.

The demonstration followed the abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area, which has sparked widespread concern among residents and education stakeholders.

The teachers also called for safer learning environments for staff and students across the state.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed after a security meeting on Sunday that one of the abducted teachers had been killed.

According to the governor, seven teachers and an unconfirmed number of pupils were kidnapped during the attack.

“What we know right now is that seven teachers were abducted. Unfortunately, we received a video this morning indicating that one of the teachers, understood to be the Mathematics teacher, was killed by the terrorists,” Makinde said.

He expressed condolences to the victim’s family and also sympathised with members of the rescue team, including soldiers, Amotekun Corps operatives and local vigilantes, who reportedly encountered improvised explosive devices during rescue operations.

Makinde said injured operatives were responding to treatment and assured that the government would cover their medical expenses.

The governor added that the state had intensified efforts to rescue the remaining abductees using both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.

He appealed to residents, community leaders and religious groups to remain calm, assuring them that the government was working continuously to secure the release of the victims.
