Tinubu’s rising trust in Abiodun sparks loyalty debate in APC

The growing perception that Dapo Abiodun is being positioned as a leading figure within the South-West political structure of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked concerns over what critics describe as a troubling shift in political values within the ruling party.

Observers argue that there is a clear distinction between political strategy and the abandonment of principle, warning that when that boundary disappears, it creates a dangerous precedent capable of weakening the very system it seeks to preserve.

The development has drawn attention because of the political dynamics leading up to the 2023 elections, when several figures believed to have benefited from Tinubu’s political influence appeared reluctant to fully back his presidential ambition. Among those frequently mentioned were former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola and former presidential adviser Femi Ojudu.

Abiodun himself was also linked to that period of political uncertainty due to perceived closeness to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, whose presidential ambition placed him in direct competition with Tinubu during the APC primaries.

Despite those divisions, some party loyalists openly stood behind Tinubu’s ambition. Former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun were highlighted among those who offered unwavering support, with Amosun reportedly stepping aside from his own ambition to strengthen Tinubu’s chances.

Critics now question why Abiodun appears to be gaining increased prominence within the South-West political arrangement despite earlier perceptions of political hesitation. They point to the irony of his current standing, especially considering Tinubu’s widely discussed “Eleyi” remark in Abeokuta, which many interpreted as dismissive.

The situation has also revived comparisons with the fallout between Tinubu and Aregbesola, a once-close political relationship that later deteriorated and contributed to internal tensions within the APC in Osun State and beyond. Analysts say the episode should have reinforced the importance of loyalty and ideological consistency within political alliances.

According to critics, elevating figures perceived as politically ambiguous above long-standing loyalists risks weakening trust within the party structure. They warn that rewarding strategic hesitation over steadfast support could encourage opportunism, erode party discipline, and create an environment where shifting allegiances become normalised.

The broader concern, they argue, is that political actors whose loyalty has previously appeared uncertain may continue to operate with the same ambiguity, potentially exposing the party to future internal instability.
