The public has reacted with a mix of praise and heavy skepticism following a major drug bust by the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos.

On May 19, law enforcement officials targeted a residence in Mende, Maryland, resulting in the arrest of 41-year-old businessman Eke Henry Ifeanyi. Ifeanyi, an alleged drug kingpin, had been masking large-scale drug imports as thermal receipt papers. During the raid, officers uncovered and recovered 425 bags of a “Canadian Loud” cannabis stash hidden inside a three-bedroom warehouse, with the confiscated illicit drugs valued at an estimated ₦7.8 billion. Smuggling vehicles outfitted with fake “Presidency” registration plates were also seized at the scene.

The operation came to light following months of surveillance triggered by an initial citizen tip. Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Jimoh highly praised the team’s operational integrity after they reportedly turned down a staggering ₦500 million bribe offered by the suspect to compromise the case.

While the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) continues its investigations to track down the rest of the criminal network, online discussions have ignited intense debate, with some users commending the rare display of institutional honesty and others flatly refusing to believe the reported bribe rejection.

Here are some of the reactions:

Daniel Regha (@DanielRegha): Never trusting the police on issues like this; Same people who extort Nigerians using POS and routine checkpoints are rejecting over N500m. Nice try.

Danny Of Owerri 🇳🇬🇺🇸 (@…): No Nigerian police can reject 500 million naira. Either they asked for a 2 billion naira bribe, and it wasn’t granted. Do you know what 500 million naira is?

UG (@UgwennaEjikem): I can see why the police rejected it, the offer is appalling & I stand with the NPF. Bribers get your paying rates up. At least offer them 30% or something

Ọmọ Akin 🇳🇬 (@GuyMr10): A Police Officer turned down ₦500m bribe, arrested suspect and confiscate ₦7.8 Billion worth of Canadian Loud, this is good 💗💪🏾

Eazzy_Ayo🔮🏆 (@Eazzy_Ay…): Yaribas are lazy, Edo people are lazy, ijaw men are lazy its only their women that hustle…….ibos are the only hard working and richest ethnic group in Africa, they cannot kill the enterprenurial spirit of the ibos…..ibo amaka!!! Mind you this is the 3rd burst in less than 10 days.

Quatre Gist 🗣️ (@QuatreGist): May God bless that Nigerian policeman who rejected ₦500 million naira bribe from Eke Henry Ifeanyi, A drug cartel kingpin with 425 bags of suspected illicit drugs that worth ₦7.8 billion naira in Lagos. Give us seaport, give us seaport… Yen! Yen!! Yen!!!

fowoshere🪄 (@fwzishere): The police rejected the N500 million not because they are good people, but because it’s too small compared to the value of the loud.

Idris A. Oni PhD (@IdrisAOni1): These criminals are determined to kill everyone, trying to make money by any and every means possible. This is too much. It is terrorism and should be treated as such. Kudos to the NPF for standing firm and doing their job. This is the kind of NPF that we want to see always. May God continue to expose all the criminals and may the law punish them severely for the evils that they commit against us all. Āmīn.

Grace (omo’badan) (@ifete…): Na lie, its either the guy no roja well or another person don pay them more to cast him🤣🤣

OMA ANN (@ann_omatf): So there’s still money police can refuse in this economy. Interesting.

James Olusanya Babatunde (@…): They knew the bribe would be a smoke they couldn’t quench, nobody should tell me about the Nigerian police rejecting a N50 bribe let alone N500 million.
