The Nigerian Army says its troops have successfully disrupted a planned kidnapping operation in Kogi State after acting on intelligence about the movement of suspected terrorists in Lokoja Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out by soldiers of the 12 Brigade, 2 Division, targeted a route allegedly being used by the criminal group to launch attacks around Jakura II community.

In a statement, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt Hassan Abdullahi, explained that troops positioned themselves at a strategic location along the Old Obajana–Tajimi Road after receiving information about the suspects’ activities.

“Acting on the intelligence, troops swiftly deployed and occupied a suspected terrorist crossing point along Old Obajana–Tajimi Road, where an ambush was laid to deny the criminals freedom of action.

“During the operation, troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them with effective fire.

“Following the firefight, one terrorist was neutralised, while other members of the criminal group fled the scene with suspected gunshot wounds,” he said.

Following the encounter, soldiers searched the area and recovered an AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of ammunition, a bandolier and mobile phones believed to belong to the fleeing suspects.

“The recovered items further corroborate the involvement of the criminal elements in kidnapping activities within the general area,” he noted.

The Army spokesperson said troops remain on the trail of the escaping suspects as clearance operations continue in nearby locations.

He added that the success of the mission highlights the military’s commitment to tackling insecurity and protecting communities from criminal activities.

The Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brig. Gen. Kasim Umar Sidi, commended the troops for their dedication and professionalism, while encouraging residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information that could help prevent future attacks.
