The Independent National Electoral Commission says preparations for the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial by-election have reached an advanced stage, with more than 87 per cent of arrangements already completed.

Speaking ahead of the June 20 election, Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, disclosed that election materials not classified as sensitive are being distributed across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district.

“We are sending the non-sensitive materials today (June 3) to our council area offices involved and by Thursday (June 4), the non-sensitive materials will be further moved to INEC’s Registration Area Centres (RACs),” he said.

He also noted that all BVAS machines designated for the exercise have been properly configured and fully powered to ensure efficient voter accreditation.

According to the commissioner, the electoral body has concluded consultations with key stakeholders across the state and the affected local government areas, with participants receiving clarifications on issues relating to the poll.

Chukwu revealed that four political parties are expected to participate in the election but declined to identify them pending approval from the commission’s headquarters.

“Why I will not mention the political parties yet is that we are waiting for our headquarters’ approval of the report written on the parties’ primaries conducted,” he said.

As part of the final phase of preparations, INEC plans to train election personnel later this week and collaborate with security agencies to ensure adequate protection of voters, officials, and election materials during the by-election.
