Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the abductors of recently kidnapped schoolchildren to release them immediately, describing their situation as distressing and a reflection of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
In a statement shared on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi said he was deeply troubled by images showing the children with visible signs of physical abuse while in captivity.
He said the incident highlighted the depth of insecurity in the country and warned that continued governance failures and societal neglect would have long-term consequences for future generations.
Obi stated that society’s present actions and failures would eventually “take its revenge” on children, stressing that the effects of poor governance often persist long after those responsible have left office.
He also linked rising national debt to future burdens on younger generations, arguing that financial decisions made today would impact children in years to come.
The former governor of Anambra State made a direct appeal to the abductors, urging them to consider the innocence of the victims and the pain of their families.
He said no grievance or hardship could justify the suffering of children, adding that every child reflects the humanity of society at large.
Obi called for compassion and urged those responsible to reconsider their actions, stressing that there was still room for remorse and change.
He concluded by appealing for the immediate and unconditional release of the children so they could be reunited with their families.
