The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across the state’s 33 local government areas to the possibility of flash floods in June 2026, following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, issued the warning in Ibadan, noting that the weather outlook suggests intense thunderstorms and runoff that may lead to brief flooding in some communities.
He explained that while the government is working to clear blocked drainage channels, residents also have a role to play by keeping gutters and waterways free of refuse that could obstruct water flow.
Aderinto advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid attempting to pass through flooded roads, especially at night, warning that flash floods can be dangerous and difficult to predict.
He also cautioned against activities such as illegal dredging and construction that could block natural water channels, saying such actions violate environmental regulations and would attract penalties.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas were urged to take preventive steps, including moving valuables, documents, and electrical appliances to safer positions above ground level.
Parents and guardians were further advised to keep children and vulnerable persons indoors during heavy rainfall to reduce risk.
The commissioner assured that the state government had activated emergency response plans and urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season.
