The Nigerian labour movement has been plunged into mourning following the death of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), who passed away while on official duty in Geneva, Switzerland.

Adeleke was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) when he died on Tuesday after a brief illness.

Reports indicate that he fell ill during the conference and was taken for medical attention, where he later died.

An official of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) confirmed the development, describing Adeleke as a committed trade unionist who worked tirelessly for workers’ welfare and decent working conditions.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the official said.

A member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Adeleke led the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council and was actively involved in labour advocacy and initiatives aimed at improving workers’ welfare.

The NLC said its leadership had visited the hospital where his remains are kept and had commenced arrangements for repatriating his body to Nigeria.

The congress extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider labour community, describing his death as a huge loss and urging workers to uphold his legacy of dedication to labour rights and social justice.
