The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says more than 418,000 tonnes of waste were removed across Lagos in May 2026, averaging about 13,200 tonnes daily.

The agency made this known in its monthly operational report, which detailed activities aimed at improving sanitation and waste management services across the state.

According to LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, 442 licensed Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators were active during the period, while several collection routes were being reviewed to improve efficiency and expand service coverage.

“LAWMA and its network of licensed Private Sector Participation operators evacuated a total of 418,500 tonnes of waste across the State in May, representing an average daily evacuation of 13,200 tonnes. A total of 442 PSP operators remained active across Lagos State, while 27 routes were currently under review as part of ongoing efforts to optimise service coverage and improve collection efficiency,” Gbadegesin said.

The report showed that the agency also removed refuse from 173 black spots located in markets, along road medians, at bus stops, and in other public areas affected by illegal dumping.

LAWMA noted that it handled hundreds of complaints and service requests from residents during the month as part of efforts to strengthen customer service and improve response times.

To support its operations, the agency deployed compactor trucks, skip trucks, and other equipment across the state while implementing measures designed to boost efficiency and environmental compliance.

Residents were encouraged to dispose of waste properly, engage approved PSP operators, and report service-related concerns through official channels.

“Lagos operates one of the largest urban waste management systems in Africa, requiring continuous investment, infrastructure upgrades, enforcement, and stakeholder collaboration to meet the demands of a rapidly growing population,” he said.

Gbadegesin added that LAWMA remains focused on maintaining a cleaner environment and improving waste management services for Lagos residents.
