The House of Representatives has finalised the formation of its minority leadership following the unanimous endorsement of three lawmakers to fill vacant principal officer positions within the opposition caucus.
The decision was announced during Thursday’s plenary session, where minority members of the 10th House presented a consensus list for the positions of minority leader, deputy minority leader, and minority whip.
Following the nominations, Rep. Frederick Agbedi was selected as minority leader, Rep. Abdulsamad Dasuki was chosen as deputy minority leader, while Rep. Mansur Soro was appointed as minority whip.
During the sitting, Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, officially confirmed the nominations on the floor and declared the minority leadership positions filled.
He noted that the move marked the completion of the House’s principal officer structure, expressing confidence in the new leadership’s ability to contribute effectively to legislative duties in the 10th Assembly. “Today, the body of principal officers is complete,” Abbas said.
The Speaker also congratulated the newly appointed lawmakers and pledged the cooperation of the House leadership in supporting their roles.
“I want to seize this opportunity, on behalf of the entire House, to congratulate the three persons and wish them all the best in their new positions.
Let them be assured that the leadership of the House will work with them assiduously in ensuring that we achieve the legislative agenda and objectives of this very important 10th Assembly,” he stated.
The appointments came after consultations among opposition parties aimed at filling the vacant slots and ensuring stronger representation for the minority caucus within the House leadership structure.
With the latest development, both majority and minority caucuses now have full sets of principal officers, a move expected to improve coordination and strengthen oversight functions in the House.
