rotesters on Friday returned to the streets of Lagos in a renewed #EndBadGovernance protest, marking Democracy Day with fresh calls for government intervention over worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and the rising cost of living.

The demonstration, which brought together activists, civil society organisations, and concerned citizens, featured peaceful marches and placards with messages such as “Free All Captives Now,” “End Anti-People Policies Now,” and “For a Living Wage and Mass Creation of Employment.”

The protest comes against the backdrop of recent coordinated mass abductions in Oyo and Borno states within hours of each other, alongside ongoing economic hardship affecting citizens nationwide.

Participants also urged authorities to urgently address inflation, high transportation costs, and declining purchasing power, which they said have continued to worsen living conditions.

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, joined the protest, adding his voice to calls for reforms and improved governance. Falana had earlier aligned with civil society groups declaring June 12 as a day of nationwide protest over insecurity, hunger, and economic challenges.

Security operatives were deployed to the protest grounds to maintain order.

Meanwhile, a separate group also emerged in support of the government’s ongoing economic reforms, staging a counter-march with banners reading “Better Days Ahead for Nigeria,” and urging citizens to remain patient as reforms are expected to deliver long-term economic recovery and growth.
