Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was reportedly taken to hospital after collapsing during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred after police officers moved to disperse demonstrators who had gathered to protest insecurity, economic hardship, and what they described as poor governance.
The protest, attended by activists and civil society groups, reportedly turned chaotic when security personnel fired tear gas canisters in an effort to break up the gathering.
Witnesses said protesters fled the area as tear gas filled the venue, and amid the confusion, Sowore was allegedly affected by the fumes and lost consciousness.
Supporters and fellow protesters quickly came to his assistance and evacuated him from the scene. Sources close to the activist reportedly said he regained consciousness while being transported away from the protest venue.
He was later taken to an undisclosed medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.
The incident further heightened tensions at the Democracy Day demonstration, where participants had assembled to voice concerns over the country’s security situation, economic difficulties, and governance challenges.
