The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a 36-year-old woman, Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly kept in chains and confined by her brother for more than one year and four months.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed the development on Monday, stating that the command acted on a distress report received on June 12, 2026.

According to him, “The command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, alleging that the victim, an indigene of Anambra State, was being unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions by her brother, Mr. Chinedu Aniekuoku.

“A team of detectives from the Katampe Division was immediately deployed to the scene following receipt of the report.

“Upon arrival, the suspect became hostile and resisted the officers, refusing them access to the premises where he had confined his sister.

“However, the officers forcefully gained entry into the room and discovered the victim in chains, in an extremely emaciated condition and lying on her own waste under deplorable sanitary conditions.

“The suspect was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.”

Police investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly took the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago.

Authorities believe the prolonged confinement may have been aimed at preventing the woman from demanding answers about the whereabouts of her child.

Sanusi said efforts are underway to locate and rescue the missing boy, while the victim continues to receive treatment and rehabilitation.

He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court once investigations are completed.

The FCT Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and urged residents to report cases of abuse, unlawful detention, and other criminal activities to law enforcement agencies.
