Germany shot-stopper Manuel Neuer added another milestone to his remarkable career on Sunday, becoming the first player aged 40 or older to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup during Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao.

By starting the Group Stage encounter, Neuer set a tournament record at 40 years and 79 days old. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper also became the seventh-oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup.

The appearance further etched his name into German football history, as he surpassed Lothar Matthäus to become the oldest player ever to represent the German national team.

The achievement marks a remarkable turnaround for Neuer, whose international career appeared to be over just months ago. Following discussions with senior teammates and head coach Julian Nagelsmann, the veteran shot-stopper opted to return to the national setup.

Since making his comeback, Neuer has re-established himself as a key figure in Germany’s starting lineup, contributing both experience and leadership as the team pursues World Cup success.

Germany will aim to build on their dominant opening win when they face Côte d’Ivoire in their next Group Stage match on Saturday at BMO Field in Toronto.
