Egypt put in a determined display but were unable to secure their maiden FIFA World Cup victory at Seattle Stadium, settling for a 1-1 draw against Belgium in a fiercely contested Group G clash.
Match Report
In spite of the draining 30-degree temperatures, both sides started brightly and looked eager to attack. However, the first notable chance did not arrive until the seventh minute, when Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne struck narrowly wide from long range. Egypt remained disciplined and purposeful on the ball, with Omar Marmoush standing out, although a well-drilled Belgian backline repeatedly cut out their advances.
That resistance was finally broken in the 20th minute. Emam Ashour collected Mohamed Salah’s straightforward pass and unleashed a powerful effort from distance. His right-footed strike left Thibaut Courtois with no chance as it found the bottom corner. Belgium increased their efforts to involve Jérémy Doku, yet they continued to lack cohesion in attack, and the Manchester City winger’s wayward stoppage-time attempt reflected a frustrating first half for the Red Devils.
Belgium survived an early scare after the restart during a goalmouth scramble and almost equalised moments later when De Bruyne’s direct free-kick, awarded after Doku had been brought down, crashed against the woodwork. Courtois was then required to push away Salah’s free header before Ashour sent the rebound comfortably wide.
The influence of Man City players remained evident throughout the contest. Marmoush later led a dangerous counterattack, but Nathan Ngoy intervened at the crucial moment before he could shoot. That opportunity seemed to inspire Belgium, and Youri Tielemans came close with a superb left-footed volley that drifted just past the post. The momentum shifted significantly in the 66th minute when Romelu Lukaku entered the match. Within moments, his presence caused problems, and as Mohamed Hany attempted to clear the ball from the striker’s path, he inadvertently turned it into his own net.
With a route back into the game, Belgium pushed forward relentlessly. Mostofa Shobeir then produced an outstanding one-handed save to keep out Brandon Mechele late in the match. The result means Belgium have suffered only one defeat in their last 16 World Cup group-stage fixtures (W8, D7). Although Egypt missed out on recording a fifth clean sheet in six matches, the quality of their performance will provide considerable encouragement for the African heavyweights.
