Police deny alleged kidnapping incident in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has denied reports making the rounds on social media claiming that passengers were kidnapped along the Kabba–Okene Road on June 17, describing the information as false and misleading.

Police spokesperson Oyiza Salisu clarified in a statement on Friday that no such kidnapping took place on the route.

She explained that around 9 p.m. on June 17, a commercial bus driven by an indigene of Kabba, Ojo, was heading to Ibilo with cocoyam when the driver noticed strange lights ahead on the road.

According to her, the driver made a U-turn attempt and, on spotting some approaching individuals, abandoned the vehicle and ran to a nearby military checkpoint for safety.

The command stressed that “no passenger was kidnapped or harmed,” adding that there were no passengers in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Preliminary investigations also suggested the situation was not criminal, as the vehicle reportedly developed an electrical fault that caused confusion during the journey.

Police further stated that the goods were later transferred to another vehicle and successfully delivered to their destination without any issues.

Salisu added that the matter was handled at a military checkpoint and was not formally reported to the police because there was no kidnapping or casualty.

She concluded that reports of an armed attack and abduction were inaccurate and should be disregarded.
