The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Agwu Ukpo, the man seen in a viral video assaulting a woman in Aba.

The 37-year-old suspect, from Akanu Ohafia, allegedly attacked Amarachi Chinyere following a disagreement over a pot of soup. The incident reportedly took place in Aba.

In a statement posted on her X account, Maureen Chinaka, the command’s spokesperson, said the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the state police command.

She added that the case is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and assured that the suspect will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

“ABIA POLICE COMMAND ARRESTS THE SUSPECT IN A VIRAL VIDEO ASSAULTING A WOMAN: FACES ASSAULT / ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES,” the statement reads.

“SUSPECT: Agwu Ukpo, Male, 37 years of Akanu Ohafia, Abia State.

“1. Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Abia Command, have apprehended the above mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chiyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup.

“2. The case is currently under discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

“3. The Abia State Police Command once again strongly condemns this barbaric and inhumane act of domestic violence and reiterates the fact that such behaviour is unacceptable under any circumstances. Members of the public are hereby urged to desist from all forms of violence, as the Command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served in the state and that perpetrators of crime will be made to face the wrath of the law.”
