World Cup: Bosnia-Herzegovina edge closer to knockouts as Qatar crash out

Bosnia and Herzegovina moved to the brink of a historic place in the World Cup knockout rounds after beating Qatar 3-1, with teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegović producing a stunning long-range strike in a result that ended the hosts’ hopes of progression.

Knowing that victory would secure third place in Group B, Sergej Barbarez’s side delivered a commanding display at Seattle Stadium and now appear well-positioned to advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Bosnia and Herzegovina started brightly, registering five attempts in the opening 23 minutes, all from outside the penalty area. Their persistence paid off in the 29th minute when Alajbegović unleashed a powerful effort from distance that flew into the top corner, giving his side a deserved lead.

The goal also saw the 18-year-old enter the record books, becoming the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history.

Bosnia and Herzegovina doubled their advantage five minutes later when Mahmoud Abunada inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Edin Džeko then came close to adding a third but was denied by the woodwork.

Qatar responded before half-time through Hassan Al Haydos, who finished from close range in the 42nd minute to reduce the deficit. They nearly drew level shortly afterwards when Pedro Miguel struck the post.

The hosts continued to push after the restart, with Akram Afif going close to an equaliser as he rattled the side netting from a difficult angle. However, Qatar struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite enjoying long spells of possession.

Bosnia and Herzegovina remained patient and eventually sealed the result in the closing stages. After Qatar failed to deal with a corner, substitute Ermin Mahmić reacted quickest to score and put the game beyond doubt.

Bosnia and Herzegovina on the cusp of history

While qualification is not yet mathematically guaranteed, Bosnia and Herzegovina are in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their World Cup history, having exited at the group stage during their only previous appearance in 2014.

Alajbegović, who was just six years old during that tournament, delivered the standout moment of the match with his spectacular opener. The youngster became the youngest player ever to score a World Cup goal from outside the box, surpassing the mark previously held by Kylian Mbappé from the 2018 tournament.

He also joined an exclusive list as only the third player aged 18 or younger this century to appear in all three group-stage matches for a European nation at a World Cup, following Spain’s Gavi in 2022 and Russia’s Dmitri Sychev in 2002.

Although Bosnia and Herzegovina spent much of the second half defending, Qatar rarely tested goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, with Pedro Miguel’s stoppage-time effort from distance representing their first shot on target of the half.

Mahmić’s late strike further highlighted the growing impact of substitutes at this World Cup. The forward is now one of only three players to score multiple goals off the bench in the tournament, alongside Deniz Undav and Johan Manzambi.

Remarkably, Mahmić’s second goal of the competition also made him Bosnia and Herzegovina’s all-time leading World Cup scorer despite not having started a match at the finals.

The victory ended a seven-match winless run for Bosnia and Herzegovina and leaves them waiting to discover their final group-stage fate. Nevertheless, the performance offered plenty of encouragement that their World Cup journey is far from over.
