Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes after an initial £55 million offer for the Newcastle United midfielder was turned down.
According to Brazilian outlet ge.globo, the Gunners are preparing an improved bid as they seek to bolster their midfield ahead of the new season.
Despite missing out on European football next term, Newcastle United are said to be unwilling to sell their captain, who remains a key figure both on and off the pitch. Guimaraes is under contract until 2028, strengthening the club’s position in any potential negotiations.
The report adds that Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is driving the move. Berta has long admired the Brazilian international and previously attempted to sign him in 2020 during his time at Atletico Madrid, although the midfielder eventually joined Olympique Lyonnais.
Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Newcastle are reportedly under no pressure to cash in on one of their most influential players.
While Guimaraes is aware of Arsenal’s interest, his immediate focus remains on international duty with Brazil at the FIFA World Cup.
The midfielder has been one of Brazil’s standout performers in the tournament, registering three assists during the group stage. He is expected to start when Brazil national football team face Japan national football team in the knockout round on Monday.
