The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as head coach of the German national team following their exit from the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The federation is now set to open talks with Jürgen Klopp as a possible replacement.

In an official statement, the DFB said its shareholder representatives and supervisory board unanimously agreed—on the recommendation of President Bernd Neuendorf—to end Nagelsmann’s contract with immediate effect.

Nagelsmann had earlier informed senior officials in a private meeting after Germany’s elimination that he wished to leave his post, a request the federation has now accepted.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf thanked him for his service since 2023, praising his professionalism and commitment during his time in charge.

In his own remarks, Nagelsmann said the decision followed deep reflection after the team’s World Cup exit, adding that a fresh start would be in the best interest of the squad. He expressed gratitude to the players, staff, the federation, and supporters, while apologising for the disappointing tournament.

DFB sporting director Rudi Völler also acknowledged Nagelsmann’s efforts, describing him as a dedicated coach who acted in the team’s interest despite the setback.

The federation confirmed that assistants Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner will also depart alongside him.

DFB further stated that it will now begin formal contact with Jürgen Klopp, who has previously shown openness to the role.

Separately, DFB Sports Managing Director Andreas Rettig has decided not to renew his contract beyond its expiry at the end of the year for personal reasons.
